1. What is Waterproofing Mortar? Where is it Used? Application Steps and the Merks Quality Difference
Protecting buildings against water is vital for both maintaining structural integrity and improving living comfort. Waterproofing mortar, one of the most frequently used waterproofing products, is an effective insulation material that, thanks to its cement-based formula, can be easily applied to surfaces and forms a waterproof layer once dry.
So, what is waterproofing mortar, where is it used, and what should be considered for a quality application? In this article, we share with you both the technical details and our solutions in this field as Merks Construction Chemicals.
What is Waterproofing Mortar?
Waterproofing mortar is a cement-based, polymer-added, two-component (or single-component) waterproofing product. It provides both waterproofing and a certain degree of elasticity on the applied surface, providing long-lasting protection unaffected by structural movements.
When applied to the surface, these mortars seal pores to prevent water infiltration and, thanks to their high adhesion, can be used safely for many years.
Where is it used?
In wet areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, and balconies
On terraces and roofs
In swimming pools
In foundation and curtain concrete
In elevator shafts and basements
In other words, the waterproofing mortar, which can be used both indoors and outdoors, is perfectly compatible with surfaces such as concrete, plaster and screed.
Application Steps
For successful waterproofing, the application steps must be followed correctly:
1) Surface Preparation: The surface must be dry, clean, dust-free, and sound. It must be free of residue that could inhibit adhesion, such as oil, grease, and paint.
2) Mixing Preparation: If the product is two-component, the liquid component should be gradually added to the dry component and mixed until a homogeneous consistency is achieved. Thanks to the specially developed polymer additives in Merks products, clumping and consistency problems are avoided.
3) Application: The first coat is applied thinly. The second coat should be applied in the opposite direction after the first coat has completely dried. This will completely close the pores and cover the entire surface.
4) Protection: After application, the surface must be protected from external factors such as direct sun, rain, and frost.
